About the interview
In an interview, Dr Anna Athanasaki discusses modern preventive screening for women - and how much it has changed in recent years.
As she explains, screening for the modern woman is no longer limited to a simple Pap test: it combines liquid-based cytology, HPV typing with molecular testing for sexually transmitted infections, colposcopy and, where needed, a cervical biopsy.
The aim of all this is early prevention and the reduction of the HPV viral load, which is linked to many types of cancer.

Journalist: With us is Dr Anna Athanasaki, gynaecological surgeon and obstetrician, at the Medical Awards of Med Professionals. This year the awards are covered by the newspaper «Imerisia». Dr Athanasaki, tell us about the diagnostic measures that can prevent illness and protect women's sexual health.
Dr Athanasaki: Thank you very much for the question, it is very topical. What we gynaecologists must stress is that the screening test for the modern woman has changed - it is not only about the simple Pap test. The Pap test itself can now be more diagnostic, using the liquid-based method (ThinPrep). Besides the Pap test, the examination must always include HPV typing (the HPV test), which can be combined with molecular testing for sexually transmitted infections. And we must never forget colposcopy and, where needed, a biopsy of the cervix. All of these together help us reduce the HPV viral load worldwide, a virus that is now linked to many types of cancer.
